Job Description
|
| This is entry level general duty firefighting work in the protection of life and property by preventing, combating and extinguishing fire. Work primarily involves the manipulation of specialized firefighting and EMS tools and equipment.
Work is performed in accordance with departmental policies and procedures and established firefighting practices. Decisions made are generally limited by established procedure, but the work may involve exercise of judgement in the methods or techniques used at Fire Department incidents. The work requires knowldedge that is to be learned on the job, both through a formal training program and with considerable supervisory participation. Close supervision is received with technical direction and guidance. Work originates from specific oral assignments from a superior, both at the incident and in stationhouse duties. Work is reviewed primarily by observation from a superior. Work may involve some contact with the general public that requires courtesy and tact. Work requires performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may involve extreme physical exertion under such handicaps as smoke, height, heat, and cramped surroundings. Work is performed on 24 hour shifts and employees sleep nights when not responding to alarms.

| Applicants who are accepted for employment will be required to attend the initial Roswell Fire Department Training School prior to assignment on shift. These classes will be scheduled Monday through Friday with a few extending into night classes and Saturdays. The Firefighter Recruit must obtain certification in all areas of the initial training, Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Defense Driving, CPR, Haz-Mat I-Awareness and Haz-Mat II- Operations. They must also successfully pass a class on Infectious Disease, Rope Rescue, and Vehicle Extrication as well as all phases of the Recruit Practical exams.
Applicants who have successfully completed the Recruit Training and are non - certified at the EMT-B level will be sent to a special class for Emergency Medical Technician-Basic. This in an 8 credit hour college level course. The non-certified Firefighter Recruit must obtain a New Mexico certification as EMT-B within one year of date of hire.
Applicants who are hired and who are liceensed in another state will be required to meet the New Mexico EMT-B requirements within one year of the date of hire.
Applicants who are hired and who attend the EMT courses will do so at the expense of the City of Roswell and are paid while attending class. Most training will be done when on duty at the RFD. There will be times when the RFD deems it necessary for an employee to attend a special training class out of town. During such training allowable expenses and /or per diem will be paid by the City of Roswell. The RFD works on a 24 hour shift with 24 hours on and 48 hours off. The RFD provides its employees with uniforms and a full set of protective clothing for emergency response as outlined in the RFD Standard Operating Procedures. Retirement and Benefits package.
